2023 - Year in Review
2023 - What a year!
Reflecting on the sailing adventures of 2023, I'm filled with gratitude for the memories forged, the challenges overcome, and the friendships strengthened. From navigating through unexpected engine problems to the thrill of competitive regattas, each moment was a building block in my journey as a sailor. Weather disruptions tested our resilience, and canceled races became opportunities for camaraderie and shared stories.
As the sails are furled on this chapter, I eagerly anticipate the winds of the next boating season. Plans are afoot for new adventures, fresh challenges, and the continued pursuit of excellence on the water. Here's to the memories made and those waiting to be created in the seas that lie ahead!
Lessons Learned
As this was the first season as a boat owner in Chicago, I will be splitting my lessons up.
As a Crew Member
Don't be afraid to ask questions, especially to clarify something.
The pit position mimics what foredeck is doing. If you pay attention to their actions, it makes the job in pit easier.
Similar to above, being on foredeck helps build better understanding of what to do in pit.
You can feel how the boat reacts to the wind/water/waves, pay attention to it and you can help it perform better.
I built a solid understanding on rigging the spinnaker.
As a Skipper
You don't always have to go out past the break wall; sometime a party on the dock is just as fun.
I now have a deeper understanding of my atomic 4 gas engine. For those who haven't heard, I had engine issues all season. Fortunately, I got it to work just in time to put her away for the season, which gives me hope for 2024.
As the Kraken was mainly on the dock this season, I was able to figure out navigation system, added satellite Wi-Fi and fixed sever items I've been meaning to get to. I learned a lot from the Kraken just sitting there.
Owning a boat is not for the faint of heart (it's expensive)
The first year of boat ownership is difficult as you are learning what the previous owner was left working on.
